TiVo Winners are Grinners

The Incomplete Gamer still doesn’t know any one personally that has ever one anything of note, but thanks to Kelly of Queensland, who dropped a comment on our TiVo Easter Hunt post, we have at least heard directly from one such happy winner and learnt a valuable lesson to boot.  Back in April, when reporting on the five TiVo packages up for grabs in the TiVo Australia Easter Hunt, we cynically suggested that it was all a bit too much effort. Luckily, Kelly and her friend Rachael didn’t heed our advice.

There’s always next year for The Incomplete Gamer.  Keeping that in mind we  contacted Kelly to find out what inspired her to take part in the competition.

“My husband and I bought a TIVO at Christmas and we love it so much that we wanted our friends (Rachael and Grant) to have one too.  So I asked Rachael if she’d be interested in submitting an entry with me.  When she said that it was a good idea, we started brainstorming.  We made the props and took photos together and then Rach wrote the essay.”

While The Incomplete Gamer took the cynical lazy approach, Kelly, who doesn’t regularly enter contests took the opposite tack.

“I thought that it was a fair amount of effort (I was right) and banked on that dissuading other people from entering.”

But did she feel like a goose taking the photos in-store?

“Absolutely.  It took about a day to make our props and go around taking photos at the stores but it was heaps of fun and totally worth it – because we won!  We converted a big cardboard box into the TV icon and stuck my little sister in it, and dressed ourselves and my two year old daughter in TIVO coloured crepe paper.  The Harvey Norman photo was especially humiliating – there were kids yelling out to their parents ‘What are they doing Mummy?  They look so silly!’  People were unashamedly staring and talking about us.  We also had a bit of a problem convincing the Blockbuster staff to let us take a picture in the store too – they cited security reasons.  In the end they were cool with a cropped photo.”

For their efforts Kelly and Rachael won the TiVo, the wireless adapter and the Home Networking package.

“Rachael is going to take the TIVO and the wireless adaptor (we already have those) and we are going to use the Home Networking package. “

Kelly is an enthusiastic TiVo spokesperson.

“We use our TIVO everyday.  I never watch TV live anymore, even if I want to watch a show the night it airs, I’ll wait 15-20 minutes later just to be able to fast forward the ads.  Also, I hate the programming on free to air TV with some of my shows moving timeslots without warning.  Now that is all a thing of the past.  Hooray!  Also, I am far far far from being good with technology and it is really user friendly.  I have set up season passes and queued recordings really easily.  The TIVO suggestions have been great too – sometimes shows air in the middle of the night and I’d otherwise miss out.”

It turns out we should have listened to our folks.  Like they always said, hard work, generosity, and not caring if you look like a goose really does pay off.

Congratulations to Kelly and Rachael.
